Roof Treatments in Niskayuna

Black streaks, green moss and crusty lichen are living growth, and they shorten the life of a roof. We apply a low-pressure treatment that kills them at the root, without blasting granules off your shingles, and we work tied off with your yard protected.

What a Roof Treatment Does and Why It Matters

The dark streaks running down most asphalt roofs are a cyanobacteria called Gloeocapsa magma. It feeds on the limestone filler in shingles and spreads year after year. Moss is the bigger problem: it holds water against the shingle, lifts the tabs as it grows and lets ice work underneath through the winter freeze-thaw cycle. Lichen anchors into the granule surface and is the hardest of the three to shift.

Our roof treatment is a measured solution applied at low pressure, close to garden-hose force. It soaks into the growth and kills it, then rain finishes the job by breaking down and rinsing away what is left over the following weeks. Nothing is scraped or blasted, because high-force spray strips the protective granules and defeats the point of treating the roof at all.

What Every Roof Treatment Includes

Roof inspection before we start

We look at the type and extent of growth, check for loose or cracked shingles and note any flashing that looks lifted. You get photos of what we found, and if a repair matters more than a treatment, we tell you.

Property protection

Shrubs and beds under the eaves are pre-wetted and covered, and downspout outlets are directed away from plantings. Outdoor furniture, grills and toys get moved or covered.

Low-pressure application

The mix is applied from the eave upward so it does not run onto dry, untreated areas. Strength is matched to the growth, with heavier mixes kept for thick moss and lichen.

Rinse-down and walkaround

We rinse plantings, siding and walkways again when we finish and remove all covers. Before we leave, we walk the property with you and point out what to expect as the growth fades.

Signs Your Roof Needs a Treatment

  • Black or gray streaks

Long dark stripes that run from the ridge toward the gutters are bacterial growth, and the north-facing side usually shows them first. Left untreated, the stain widens a little more each year.

  • Green moss in shady spots

Moss takes hold where the roof stays wet longest: valleys, lower edges and anything sitting under big trees. As the clumps thicken, they pry up shingle edges and give meltwater a path underneath.

  • Pale crusty patches

Round, flat gray-green spots are lichen. It bonds tightly to the granules and needs a treatment that kills the root structure.

  • Grit piling up below the downspouts

Every asphalt shingle sheds a little grit as it ages. Growth that keeps the surface wet speeds up that shedding, so treating sooner saves more of the protective layer still on your roof.

  • Shingles that stay damp

If parts of the roof stay dark and wet long after the rest has dried, organic growth is usually trapping water there.

How Treatment Day Runs

  1. 1

    Safety setup

We set ladders with standoffs so they never lean on gutters, and every crew member on the roof is harnessed to a secure anchor. We ask that children and pets stay inside while we work.

  2. 2

    Ground protection

Plants are soaked and covered, and we mark off the drip zone around the house so no one walks under the eaves.

  3. 3

    Treatment and dwell time

We apply the solution slope by slope and let it sit long enough to penetrate the growth. Heavy moss may get a second pass on the worst sections.

  4. 4

    Rinse, cleanup and follow-up

Landscaping and siding are rinsed, covers come off and ladders come down. Streaks typically lighten within days, while moss and lichen release gradually with rain over several weeks.

What Goes Into Your Roof Treatment Price

We price a roof only after we have looked at it in person. Two roofs with the same footprint can need very different amounts of solution, rigging and time. Your free quote comes by phone and spells out what the work covers, and these are the details that shape it.

Roof size and pitch
Larger roofs need more solution and more time. Steep pitches require extra anchors and slower, more careful movement.
Height and access
A two-story home or a roof over a deck, sunroom or steep slope of yard takes more rigging to work safely.
How heavy the growth is
Light streaking takes one pass. Thick moss mats and old lichen need stronger mixes and sometimes a second application.
Landscaping under the eaves
Dense, delicate plantings around the foundation mean more time pre-wetting, covering and rinsing.

Roof Treatment Questions

Something not covered here? (518) 832-5306

Will the treatment damage my shingles?

No. The solution goes on at low pressure and nothing is scraped or sprayed hard, so the granules stay in place. High-force water is what tears up asphalt shingles, and we never put it on a roof.

Is it safe for my plants and pets?

We protect plantings by soaking them before, covering them during and rinsing them after. Pets should stay inside during the work and until the surfaces are rinsed, which is usually a matter of hours.

Why is there still moss after you leave?

The treatment kills the moss on contact, but dead moss stays attached until rain loosens it. Expect it to brown and release over the following weeks rather than disappear the same day.

Will the growth come back, and when?

Eventually, yes, because spores keep arriving on the wind. A roof shaded by mature trees usually shows new growth sooner than one in full sun all day. When we inspect, we will give you a straight answer on how long your roof is likely to stay clear.

Who will be on my roof?

Our own crew, harnessed and tied off on every job. The company is licensed and insured, and with 5 years in business behind us, the people working above your home carry real coverage and real roof time.
